  • Any thoughts on why my scores are so low?

    Hi Beagles,
I was hoping someone may have some insight into why my scores are so low. I have been declined for credit in the last 6 months and cant fathom why. We were declined for a mortgage with a 15% deposit and a very good income/expenditure profile (affordability). Household income is quite high and outgoings are about 25% of this. Ive also applied for a credit card and was declined for that.

When pulling my reports from the three agencies, callcredit list my score as 'low' (2/5 on noddle), experian list me as 'fair' (764 - creditexpert) and equifax (direct) is 'fair' too (though i dont recall the score from equifax, it was middle of the road in the scale). Im just confused as to why I get declined when my history has nothign negative in it.

Revolving credit: 4 accounts open. All balances are below 50% of available credit. Oldest account is 2.5 years, youngest is 1.5 years. All accounts have perfect payment history.

Others: Bank account with overdraft. 4+ years. Additional bank with overdraft (3+ years). Mobile phone 3+ years. All with no black marks and perfect payment history, overdraft has never been used.

No defaults. No CCJs. Only two 'hard' hits in the last 6 months (the mortgage and the credit card I was declined for). Everything else is soft hits.

On Electoral roll since 2010 at current address. Lived at current address for 4 years.

Even with all this, im stuck in some kind of credit 'no mans land'. Even the moneysupermarket.com soft hit credit card matcher says im not matched to anything. Creditexperts credit matching service says there is nothing out there for me either, be it mortgages or loands or cards.

Im pretty stumped about this. Ive worked hard to be good with credit for many years and dont see why im still listed as 'low' scores and 'high' risk. Does anyone know why this may be or can anyone offer insight into why my profile is crap even though ive managed credit well?

The revolving credit available to you may have something to do with it. I know I was marked down for having credit available to me (ie high limit on credit card that wasn't being used) You also get checked for the amount of credit available to you/used vs income. (I spoke to the experian people a while back and they explained that it's if you take out other credit theres the risk you will then max everything out and overstretch)

Also is there anything on your credit report from Linked Addresses ?

Thanks Amethyst. Seems a case of 'damned if you do, damned if you dont' - if I use more than 50% of available revolving credit, the score goes down as lenders see that as a bigger risk. In terms of linked addresses - no black marks and all good. Theres no account history other than my bank accountas I was not in the Uk 2005-2008. All 'real' credit history is 2009 onwards

i tend not to worry with credit scores, it is the creditor that judges you on your credit record, not a fee paying score from a commercial entity such as experian.

they mark you down with a low score then direct you to lenders that they think fits that score by email, for a referal fee no doubt

        it stinks
