After reading the extremely useful threads on here, I went ahead with my VT of a car HP using the template letters.

The lender, Volkswagen Finance (VFS), was very professional and the whole matter was sorted in just over two weeks. On Monday I received a letter from VFS telling me that they had refunded one month's HP payment back into my account.

So, thanks to everyone for their questions and answers, they are very useful for those of us who mostly just lurk.
