  • Tax refund

I dont know where to put this.

I have, rather stupidly, only just noticed that I have been on emergency tax code since August. How do I get that tax back?

    Mocha,
As we are now in a new tax year (since April 6th I think) you will have to write to your local tax office and send them your P60. They will then work out how much rebate you're entitled to and give you your proper code.
Here is all about it and how to contact them, hope it helps Enaid x

      Re: Tax refund

Your employer should have given you a P46 to complete, when you commenced the job if you did not produce a P45. Once the new tax year started in April the code should now be a standard code and not with the X after meaning emergency.

So depending when you started that job ie, for instance if you commenced say Sept07 and you had not worked in the previous 6 months, you could well be in for a tax refund.

Don't forget the tax year runs April - April.

My advice would be if you have now lef that job and the P45 shows emergency tax, contact the tax office and they should send out a form to you for completion and they should refund you directly.

The emergency tax code is the same as a non emergency code, the only difference is that the emergency one is not on a cumalative basis and therefore will not allow you a tax refund.

you can log in to the inland revenue web site and it will confirm the allowance for the 2007/8 year so you can work out what tax you should have paid if you want to back up any letter you send.

There may not be a huge refund but every bit counts !

I recently got back £345 for my niece - she was very happy.

did you have more than 1 job in the year april 2007 to 5th april 2008?

You should have a P60 in May 2008 or a P45 when you left from each employer/agency

Then you will be able to add up your total gross pay for the tax year and then add up the total tax paid .

When you have these figures you can if you want pm me and I will work it out for you - but I am not a tax expert! just someone who does PAYE as part of my job!
