  • Lloyds bank charges

Hi everyone, I wonder if someone could give me advice for my son? He is 18 and in part time work (can't get a full time job). He has a current account with Lloyds.

Being a teenager (!) he doesn't always want to admit to me when he has got in a bit of a pickle - so his account went overdrawn by under £10 and he wasn't due to be paid for another week. Lloyds wrote to him to say that he would be charged £10 PER DAY!! until his account was back in order. So the last letter outlining the charges they will take from his account next week is - Overdraft interest 11 pence - default fees £60.

Now I know he was being foolish - if he had told me I would have given him some money to pay in to bring his account back into credit, but these charges seem extraordinary.

Is there any way we can challenge them?

Any advice would be much appreciated :-)

Does he receive any benefits? If so then he can use this Section 187 of the Social Security Administration Act 1992

      Hi legalese,

No, he is supported by me and his stepfather and works 8 hours a week. To be honest he spends most of his wages on fuel and parking for work but I don't want him to give up the job as its important he feels he has some control over his life - and its hopefully going to be easier to find a job with more hours if he is already working.

It just seems ridiculous that any bank can charge £10 a day for going overdrawn a few pounds, it is surely excesssive!!

Has he (or you) written to LTSB apologising for the oversight, and asking that - in view of the small amount overdrawn, and of his difficult circumstances - they reconsider the charges ? I find this often works.

Thanks Bill-K, I will give that a try and see if they have any common decency!
