  • Looking for second bank account

    Hey everyone,

I'm currently looking for a second basic bank account in addition to my main account. I need something really simple I can manage online. Problem is a have a bad credit history: Does that have an effect on applications I'll be making? I found a bank account on the eccount money website where they don't do credit checks. Does anyone have any advice? The number of different choices there are on google is kind of overwhelming for me

    Thanks very much!

    Hi Jessica,

Do try and keep your main account if you have a bad credit history - but be prepared for them to 'downgrade' you if they have occasion to run a credit check on you. So don't 'rock the boat' with them. When we were reclaiming our bank charges 6 years ago, we had to take out 'parachute' accounts, as the banks would often try to close our accounts if we reclaimed our charges. I took out a Co-operative Bank 'Cashminder' account, which can be operated online, but which uses Post Offices as its branch 'outlets.' A no-frills account with a Visa Debit Card only. No cheque book and no overdraft, etc. It worked fine for us. I later 'upgraded' it to a 'Smile.co.uk' current account (still under the 'Co-operative' umbrella) - and this had a £500 overdraft and a cheque book facility in addition to the Visa Debit Card. Still with them, and quite happy. Being able to use ANY Post Office as a bank branch is useful.

Sometimes a savings account with a small building society or an account wiht a cedit union can be opened without a credit check if you are not seeking credit facilities but simply despoist and withdrawal.
