  • Unauthorised Overdarft Charges

Santander have, god bless them, charged me £7.50 for an unarranged overdraft - this happened when my account went around £20 over my agreed overdraft limit - the also charged me £25 for paying a direct debit, which was the cause of this problem.
However, I paid money into our account on the same day, so technically speaking it was overdrawn for less than a day.
Can they still charge for this?

    Re: Unauthorised Overdarft Charges

I'm not sure these days, but I think the bottom line is that they are within their legal right to do so. However, I have had this situation crop up with Smile (aka Co-Operative) Bank, and I have had the charges refunded every time I wrote and apologised, and politely requested that they reconsider the charges.

Smile have now stopped this silliness, and it is now in their T&C's that they will not charge if the situation is rectified within a short time. I don't have the specifics, but I'm sure I could dig them out.

So, perhaps writing to Santander, mentioning that "the more reputable banks" - quoting the example of Smile - no longer do this" might help.

And...yes...I DO know that "reputable bank" is a contradiction in terms !!!

Ive never had an overdraft so I know little about them.

If a bank didnt want you to be overdrawn then it wouldnt let you, yet they do. This can only so the bank can start a fees racket.

Regulators are more then capable of imposing rules preventing banks letting their customers going overdrawn. Banks in the Middle East have been doing it for years.

the banks in UK do not let the account holder go ove drwan its the retail segment. they have floor limits and if u spend less then their floor limit, they dun check th bank status and th transcation goes thru. bank charges posted by bank are unfair but they r not a rakket ( i hav been working in industry for a considerable amount of time now)

charges posted by santander for 7.50 dsnt seems to be right as this figure is more obvious for arranged overdraft fee not th unararnged one, teh unarranged is 5 pound per day and 25 quids for th transaction taking u overdrwan ( i had long relationship wth banco santander group lol)
