  • Claiming charges on a closed account

I wonder if you can help. My husband was made redundant last year. He had an account with Natwest who were aware of the situation however put several hundred pounds worth of charges onto the account causing it to go massively overdrawn. We had a letter saying that they were closing the account and the amount owing would go onto a managed payment. I was wondering if it is possible to claim the charges back on this account as this would reduce the amount owed a great deal?

Also how would I go about getting records of all the charges?

I hope you can help with this one!

    Thanks

    Hiya xx

yes you can reclaim charges on the closed account. To begin with send the Subject access request to your bank - you can find this Legal Beagles - send a £10 cheque made payable to the bank with it.

They have 40 days to provide you with all the information.

however if you feel you are in financial difficulty (arrears on priorities like rent/mortgage/council tax etc and of course your husbands redundancy) then you may be able to write in with your situation now and ask them to consider refunding you a partial amount now as the charges have impacted on your circumstances and helped push you into difficulty at a time when the bank should have been being sympathetic.
