  • Help Please - Old Council Tax - ' Pre Bankruptcy Letter'

I am looking for some guidance on this.
Today I recieve a letter from a local council titled - PRE BANKRUPTCY LETTER.
This is a council I use to live under around 5 years ago and the letter look legitimate and the first correspondance I have had concerning the matter.
    The letter states as below.

You have Council Tax Arrears of £6049.97
This sum remains outstanding despite previous requests for payment and despite the council having obtained Liability Orders against you for Council Tax. This letter requires you to settle the amounts outstanding within 14 days. In the event that these debts are not settled in full the council may commence bankruptcy proceedings without futher notice.

The letter then goes on to tell me the consequences of a bankruptcy order.

Now I have not yet contacted the council on this matter but I thought it would prove helpful to ask for help in regards to this, what information I need to find out and also any information about the Bankruptcy order process.
I also find it extremly hard to beleive I owe over £6000 in council tax!

Just to be clear please, are you saying this is the first time the council has contacted you since you moved from their council area around 5 years ago? So until today you knew nothing about the council having obtained a Liability Order and no bailiffs/enforcement agents have ever visited you or contacted you?
All opinions expressed are based on my personal experience. I am not a lawyer and do not hold any legal qualifications.

Correct. I have not known anything about this or had a single enforcement visit about this ever.

I have spoken to the council. This debt is 3 accounts combined spanning back over years to 2007.
