  • Rossendales issue - Council Tax

    Good morning,

Last year I was unemployed for 6 months and due to wife working couldn't get help with council tax. We couldn't pay it. The local council (Suffolk Coastal) handed the debt over to Rossendales.

We filled in all the paperwork and made two monthly payments of £80

We have since received a letter from them which states that they want £341 every 31 days and £80 is unacceptable.

There is no way we can afford £341 per month. The outstanding debt is currently £860.03

Does anyone have any advice as to what we do next?

    Thank you in advance,

    Jamie & Katie Versey

What paperwork did you fill in and who did you send it to? There is no law that states you have to speak to or deal with a Bailiff. Providing you deny him entry to your home - no he can't force entry first no matter what he says he can do - or make sure he can levy on nothing outside, most notably a motor vehicle.

Keep making your payments direct to the Council via online banking, Council website or automated phone. You may even pay in cash but if that is refused then you need the name & position of the person refusing.

It was to Rossendale's in Lancashire. It was a form that told them our income/expenditure............

Can they refuse to accept our payment of £80 per month?

They can use it as they like but it doesn't matter what they say as I would ignore them anyway. Even if you could have afforded the sumes they say they would have altered it anyway. My cat has more powers than Mrs Grren-Jones employees, after all it is her that benefits from all this.

Have a good read of some posts on here to get a flavour of some of the things they and other bailiffs try.
