  • Moorcroft Circus

After moving house, we received a bill for an unsettled BT account. within days we then got a letter from MOORCROFTS chasing the debt. assuming we must have just made a mistake while moving, we settled the amount £212, on the MOORCROFT website.

    PROBLEM SOLVED.........Or so we thought!

two weeks later we got another letter requesting the original bill. I informed them the debt had been payed and supplied them with a printout from our bank account proving this. even after seeing this printout, they are refusing to acknowledge payment are are threatening to make a home visit. They are chasing a debt that has already been SETTLED.

WE are new to all this and really need advice!

Write back to them, including a copy of the proof of payment being made, and inform them if they do not cease and desist, you will deem any further threatening or demands for payment from them as harassment in breach of the protection from harassment act 1997 and Malicious communications act 1988, both of which are criminal offenses punishable by a fine or custodial sentence. Also inform them that you reserve the right to take legal action at any time without futher notice.

Send it recorded delivery and print your name, DO NOT sign the letter by hand.

You can also throw Attempted Blackmail at them as well. The relevant legislation is Section 21, Theft Act 1968. They have to prove they have a right in law to make any threats and that the threats are a proper means of enforcing any demands pertaining thereto. If they can't, they're in big trouble

Or, if yu want an easier life, yu can totally ignore them. You know you've paid them, you have proof that you've paid them. The more they keep on trying to demand money from you, the more evidence you have against them should you need it.

My suspicion is that this second letter is a computer generated one and has probably never seen a human hand. They are unlikely to do a doorstep visit, but if they do, you have no obligation to talk to them unless you want to. Personally, when you're in such a strong position, I'd have no hesitation in doing so if it ever came to that. I doubt it will though.
