In april this year i taxed my husbands car for 6 months of tax, he is a police officer and drives into a police station every day, where they have a car registration number camera in operation. I sept we didnt receive our renewal for the car tax, so i contacted the dvla, and they told me not to worry to take the registration docs to the post office and tax the car, that evening (the tax was 2 days overdue) he took my daughter to manchester airport in our car, he was stopped by the motorway police and told that our car tax had been cancelled by the post office because the wrong registration had been written on when i purchased it, the policeman told my husband he should of checked it, by this time you couldnt see what reg number was on the car tax disc because of sun damage. I taxed the car again, and on wed last week a bailiff called at my house and said he was coming to remove goods to the value of £750.00 for a motoring offence, which we have now found out was having no car tax. We have not received one letter regarding this matter and we do not know what to do, can anybody please help me

Have a read of this:

It may also be worth contacting the DVLA (a) as they may have a record of your initial contact, which, with the fact that you purchased a tax disc two days later, will lend a lot of weight to the fact you are telling the truth.
Read the bailiff guide and any further questions, please post up.Last edited by labman; 21st November 2011, 10:10:AM.

Re: Car Tax
They voided the car tax that i purchased in april so in theory my husband was driving round with no car tax for 6 months without us knowing, but was not stopped by the police until the one that we didnt know had been voided had just expired

Re: Car Tax
You need to complain to the DVLA immediately. They are a law unto themselves. More importantly, do not let the bailiff into your property.
Write to this address:

If you would like any help with your letter, then feel free to post up a draft here.

Re: Car Tax
It would have been dealt with in the County Courts so the bailiffs have the same power as -eg- collecting Counil Tax.
Have a read here:
Bailiff Guide - Legal Beagles Consumer Forum
and make sure you do not let them in under any circumstances.
It may also be a wise precaution to park your car a few streets away until this matter is resolved.

Re: Car Tax
What I find strange here is that DVLA can take action against you anyway, purely from the information on their computers. This would suggest that the information on their computers was quite possibly correct - I would suggest you start there and find out what they held about the vehicle.
If their computer has it down as taxed, then I would imagine you have a strong case. I know the offence is not displaying a lawful tax disc, but in this case I don't think they could really push that.

Re: Car Tax
Is the address registered with the car on DVLA correct? If no paperwork is received from the magistrates court, why are bailiffs involved without any form of contact prior to them knocking on your door? Very strange."Family means that no one gets forgotten or left behind"

Re: Car Tax
Actually, I don't think "failure to display" is an offence any more. Since they introduced the online taxing system, there can sometimes be a delay in receiving the tax disc, but it can be checked in milliseconds anyway via the database, so I believe that the failure to display offence no longer exists.

And what's more, if you can prove you paid for the tax, and that a refund was not issued (surely if the Post Office had voided the tax due to an error, you should have had a refund somehere along the line?) then you would have a very strong case.
I would do as Amy has already suggested and email the DVLA today. Is no longer here

Re: Car Tax
Have I got 14 days grace to get my new tax disc when it runs out?
No, however there is an exemption for the first 5 working days of the month from displaying a valid tax disc. The exemption will only apply in the month when the tax disc commences and where an application for a new tax disc has been made before the old one expires. Drivers should continue to display the previous tax disc until the new one arrives. After 5 days the offence will be committed if the new tax disc is not displayed.
You have advance warning when the tax is due to expire, either six months or twelve months. You should make arrangements to re tax your car within plenty of time of the expiration date of your current tax disc. You can tax your vehicle on line, see website in related information for more details.
Irrespective of whether a car is used on a road the DVLA send out automatic penalty notices to anyone who has not renewed their tax disc (unless they have completed a Statutory Off Road Notice). However, the DVLA delay sending out such notices until 14 days after the licence is expired, which is where the myth that there is 14 days grace probably began.
