  • Old lodgers

    Hello all,

I have a query about bailiffs.

I used to rent rooms out as a live in landlord. Since the last couple moved out I have been inundated with letters from credit collection agencies, car tax reminders and fines, along with the frequent visit from bailiffs looking for them.

My question is how do I stop them pestering me and are they entitled to any of my possessions? Also my finance is home alone through out the day and is finding it harassing to talk to these bailiffs.

I have rang a few of these places up with varying responses. One said no problem they would put it back up the chain and try to contact them another way. Another said we can't believe what you say, we won't change anything until you send us a copy of your council tax. I do not really want to do this to every collection agency, also I feel its a breach of my data protection.

What can I do? Is there a way to tell everyone by a data base that they no longer live here?

    Help please

    Re: Old lodgers

I sympathise with you I have had a similar problem ona smaller scale with a previous tenant .
Send people a copy cof the ct bill with your name on it but with all the other details blacked out . If you have a forwarding address for these people then supply it to all the creditors and send them on their merry way . I fear you will be plagued for some time as the unrecoverable debt is sold for less and less through the various debt collection agencies . Try having a printed notice at the door and give all their post straight back to the postie with gone away written on it .
No a bailiff cannnot take anything of yours theycan only take goods thatbelong to the debtor . Do not ever let them in as they will try to make illegal levys on your stuff. Read amy's thread on bailiffs for good advice.

Remember that bailiffs lie , they will say anything to get money but they cannot take your goods for someone elses debt . ts called stealing and even the police should be able to act .

      Thanks Seduraed.

I was hoping not to give my full name to these companies, can i just blot out my last name so they can see the first names do not tally??

That is a relief that they can not take my goods, will a letter on the door ward off bailiffs or do I need to deal with them on a case by case basis?

Why would you want to blot out your last name?

Providing you are not wanted by them also, then they will not give you a second look as soon as you prove to them you are not the one they are after

              Ok, fair point.

I just worry about sending "unnecessary" details out etc!!

I understand that azzif but considering your situation it would be a wise thing to deal with this matter and not complicate matters more than they already are. Just my opinion of course.

                    Re: Old lodgers

If you had any sort of written tenancy agreement with the person they are after then I would give them copies of that if it shows the agreement has been terminated

As for personal details, I would just give them a photo copy of photo ID
(passport with the number blacked out or Drivers licence with the driver number blacked out)
and a photo copy of a utility bill (gas/Eectric/Phone)

as proof that you are the owner of the property and that you are who you say you are

I'd just tell them to fax off.
