  • Urgent help required - Equita Bailliff coming in the morning...

For the last few months, I've been locked in a battle with the Peterborough City Council over my Council Tax Bill. I'm currently claiming Job Seeker's Allowance but was sent a bill for the full Council Tax (£1200). I told them I was not working and was told to fill in a Council Tax Claim Form, which I did. As they wouldn't backdate it, I was then given a bill for £420.

Whilst arguing this bill, the case was sent to Equita Bailiffs who have been hassling me with threatening letters, phone calls and just not listening. Last Friday, I gave up and told them I'd pay, but they said the bill had then gone up to £660.

I called the Council again and told them that I wasn't refusing to pay, I just wanted to ensure I was paying the right amount and until they had clarified that situation, how could they pass the case onto the Bailiffs??? I wanted to pay the Council directly and eventually, they agreed to allow me to do this. I paid the full amount in question today and they told me that if the Bailiff calls me, to tell him the case was now closed.

At 8.50pm tonight, the Bailiff, Paul Deakin (Tel: 07787 533977) called me (withheld his number) and told me that the bill had been paid but they were still coming after me for the Bailiff costs and will be calling on my house in the morning.

I wasn't too happy and have now read on this site to move my car, lock my doors and windows and not let him in, and to get a cricket bat ready too (!)

I intend to tell him that without having previously gained peaceful entry, a signed walking Possession or Levy, he cannot enter my house. Plus, I'll be video recording him too.

Am I right in doing this? Is there anything else I should add?

I just hope he doesn't come when I'm taking my kids to school. I wouldn't want them to see what I think of dodgy bailiffs.

Any assistance would be very much appreciated.

You are doing absolutely the right thing.

The bailiffs work for the council not the other way around and if the council say it's settled, then it's settled, but you will have to make sure the council tell the bailiffs not to hassle you.
