  • Philips visited my parents home re council tax

Philips bailiffs visited my parents house with regards to non payment of council tax. This is the first that they have heard of this. The notice of distress was addressed to my father. He wasn't in the property at the time, and the bailiff was allowed in by my mother who then signed the notice of distress.
To me, the fact that this was signed by my mother and not my father seems ridiculous, and I'm wanting to know if this is enforceable, and what they can do about it.

I hope you can help. Many thanks.

Council Tax is joint and several. This means that if a Liability Order has been issued against both of them, then both will be liable for the debt despite the bailiff's paperwork being in your father's name only.

Do they owe outstanding council tax? Have you contacted the council about this and what exactly did your mother sign?
