Re: Equita - How much can they charge in fees
****EQUITA BACK DOWN ON SPURIOUS FEE****
I wrote a letter asking Equita to provide a breakdown on the £125.08 they were demanding per ticket. Today I received this reply.
"Further to your recent communication please find detailed the information requested for unpaid: Penalty Charge notice due to ********** City Council
DEBT £80.00
COURT COSTS £0.00
BAILIFF COSTS £11.20
VAT £1.68
PAID: £0.00
TOTAL OUTSTANDING £92.88"
So in other words Equita have neglected to include the additional spurious £32.20 . They have not tried to justify it. Indeed, reading their letter it is almost as if they are claiming they never asked for it in the first place. Obviously I have other correspondence which proves otherwise. Very slippery.
They also sent a further letter for each ticket saying they had accepted my proposal to pay £92.88 by the end of the month.
So the moral of the story, as so wisely pointed out by Amy, is do not pay fees for 'services' which have not been provided (e.g. Bailiff Visits) and always write a letter demanding a detailed breakdown of fees. In this case I did not have to resort to a Subject Access Request.
I am absolutely livid these companies try it on in this way. Thousands of people must ring the Equita call centre to be told their account has 'escalated' and will pay these unjustifiable fees in order to settle their account, on fear of further action.
Many thanks to the folks on this here forum for their wisdom and support
