Hi all

I am hoping you can advise. I have received a letter today relating to my outstanding council tax. It does say they have visited my address numerous times and sent countless letters but I know that line is "standard". For the past 5 months I have been making my agreed payment but this month I started a new job so payment for July was missed or can be classed as "late".Today a letter arrived via the postman advising that the Bailiff needs to be contacted (was advised of this once I called the Call Centre) to prevent removal of goods.

I am wondering just what powers the Bailiff has to demand the payment in full or can I still continue with my monthly payments and catch up with the late/missed payment?

Any advice really appreciated and most welcome.

Ignore him and carry on making your payments.

Have a read of the bailiff guide - and make sure you never, ever let the bailiff into your property.

Hi Amy, many thanks......I am expecting a call back from him within the hour. Do I ignore the call or advise him that I am continuing to make payments and not to contact me?

The Bailiff called and spoke to the wife (via phone) and advised that he has added £200 to the debt for "charges" though did not state what these charges were for unless the debt is settled within a fortnight. If not he will be attending to remove goods.

Is this just a threat to get us to pay up the full amount and line his pockets with the "charges" or does he have legal rights on his side to be able to attend and remove goods?

Please advise folks.....the wife is panicking big time and its starting to rub off on me now!!!!!!

Have you allowed the bailiff access to your property?

If not, then there is nothing he can do, but you should send the SAR from the bailiff guide and find out what on earth he has added these charges for.

The charges he can apply to your account will depend on whether he has levied on your goods or not. If he has he is allowed to add a levy fee, but he can only charge for two visits regardless of how many times he actually visits you as long as the liability order covers one council tax year. The first visit is £24.50 and the second visit is £18.

Maybe you should call him back and ask what these fees are for.

I think this stinks.....something is not right with this fella or the "kind" payment plan he is kindly arranging.

He is making it up as he goes along. See above.
