  • Discover student loan

I borrowed 10k back in 2018 to pay for my college. In 2020 July I stopped paying and they closed my account. The amount is 11 300 now. Today I got a letter from debt collecting agency LTD trying to collect the debt. They said to call them by June 24 if i want to dispute the loan.
I have a part time job as of this year because I am a single mother.
What is the best next step in dealing with this debt?

    Hi VENUS

    Firstly try not to worry.

    a) The loan is a non-priority debt. So if you can only afford to pay £1 a month, so be it (a court will only ever ask you to pay what you can afford to pay - not saying a court will be involved).

What you need to do is send an income and expenditure form to them, it's a non-priority debt, so if your left with nothing at the end of the month, then you can't afford to pay them anything. Send the following template, amend it to suit your circumstances. Make sure you get Proof of Postage (it's free).

    b) Make sure you are claiming all the allowances that you can claim to help at this time, caveat up to you to use or not (link) -
