Amend particulars of claim

Hello legal beagles,
I am the defendant in a claim and am looking for advice.
The claimant has rushed into making the claim and has made many mistakes. I have been advised to apply to ask the court to strike out the claim and also been told it would be wise to ask the claimant to amend the claim .
Could anyone give me any advice how to write to the claimant asking for the claim to be amended as at the moment the particulars of claim contradict the statement and I can't understand the claim.

Why invite the claimant to amend? Why not write to say that the claim makes no sense, and that if they do not discontinue it you will apply to strike it out? Surely if the claim can be rescued by amendment it is for them to work out and not for you to tell them.
