Thanks Peridot and 2222 for your replies. Yes 2222, an absconding did cross my mind at one point but I think my nephew is too embedded within his extended family and community to do this.
Peridot, I was asking about interest and wondering if the period of one year after the death should be a Caveat free period or does the Caveat not affect the one year waiting period. I thought that if I mention that I am now in a position to claim interest on the outstanding amount it would speed things up a bit maybe.
I looked at the reference CPR Part 40, Practice Direction 40A para 15 and read it a few times. It is interesting, but as you say, gives no guidance as to what rate should be paid. I agree with you saying that it should reflect the general bank savings interest rate. I am willing to explore this further but I think I may wait a little longer. The problem is, without any communication I have no idea of how close I am to receiving the legacy.
I'll keep you informed of developments.
    Many thanks,
    Regards, victor.

      Hi Victor Meldrew,
as far as I can see the clock starts at the date of death. But as I mentioned the interest rates are so low currently the sum will probably be pretty negligible even if it has been several years. It is of course only on the liquid assets, or for example once a property is sold and money in the bank from that moment until distribution, not for the time 1 year after death. Hopefully I've made sense there and you get my meaning?
