Hi, I filled in a registration form for voting and they've asked me for ID, most of which I don't have because I've just moved here. On the form it says that if I do not make an application for registration I face a fine of £80, but I have, then on the letter it states that if I don't supply the ID requested my application will be rejected. Shall I ignore it then? I would prefer not to go on the electoral role as my ex partner was a bit unstable. Is it mandatory that I have to go on the register?

Re: Electoral Registration
As far as I am aware, it is compulsory to register for voting but you are in not obliged to vote, if that makes sense. You may be find £80 if you fail to register and/or give a valid reason as to why you haven't registered.
When you refer to moving 'here' is that into the country or just moved some other place within it? If you give them a call and explain your situation then it should be fine, it is unlikely that you will be fined £80 but if you choose to ignore it then, although not likely, it is possible you might be fined for failing to register or notify electoral office.
You can opt out of the open register which provides your details and anyone can purchase a copy but you can't opt out of the full register which is used for various things including detecting electoral fraud. If you have a question about the voluntary termination process, please read this guide first, as it should have all the answers you need. Re: Electoral Registration
Hi, thanks. Yes I am a British citizen and have not lived abroad. I've just spotted an old post where the advice was that people who have suffered domestic abuse or harassment can apply to have their name with held. Hoping the poster can give me some further details as councils are never very helpful.
