Is it important to have the council tax sorted BEFORE moving into a property, or can it be done after 2-3 weeks?

    Re: Council Tax Immediacy

I believe that councils ask you to report any change asap (aso that ill include a house move IMO)

    Here's some examples ~

    http://www.durham.gov.uk/article/345...-circumstances
You should tell us as soon as possible if you move house or if anything else changes that would affect the amount of council tax you pay or any discounts or exemptions you're entitled to.Financial penalties may apply if you claim discounts that you are no longer entitled to, or you don't tell us about a change of circumstances within 21 days.

    Moving house

If you're moving, complete the form below and return it to us:
Council tax change of address form (PDF, 173kb)
    https://www.york.gov.uk/info/20004/c...other_property
You need to tell us if you move into, or out of, a property within the City of York Council area, so that we can update your council tax account. You can tell us up to 2 weeks in advance of your moving date, but not earlier.
Moving to another property in the area

The moving within the area form should be used if:
    • you are responsible for council tax
    • you are moving from one York address to another

The moving into the area form should be used if:
    • you are moving into York from another area
    • you were not responsible for council tax at a previous address in York

The moving out of the area form should be used if:
    • you are moving out of York to another area
    • you will no longer be responsible for council tax at a new address in York
    https://www.blackburn.gov.uk/Pages/C...ing-house.aspx
If you have moved or will be moving into or out of a property in Blackburn you can use our online change of address form.Once we have all of the information we need we will amend our records and send you a revised bill.
If you are receiving housing or council tax benefit please tell us on the form so that we can make the necessary changes.

My advice is to write to the council for the area you are leaving (or use the form suplied.)Do the same for the council you are moving to. Get copies and ensurevaluation that if you are using email you set you email to provide you with a read receipt, and a delivered receipt. Print these off and keep them. That should allow a smooth transition .

If you are certain that the details are correct and won't change then you can notify the council tax in advance - if you do so and the details change then make sure you advise the council of this.

Notifying them within a few weeks of you moving again shouldn't cause any issues, as long as you make sure the council are fully updated.

I would always advise a person to contact the local authority as soon as details are known in order to prevent any problems.

There is, within council tax legislation, no actual requirement to approach the council to advise you are liable on a property however any long delays can cost you when it comes to trying to claim any discounts or exemptions retrospectively. Any issues regarding failures to notify the council only apply either to discounts/exemptions where a demand notice has already been issued or by way of a failure to reply to a formal notice which was issued to gather information to determine liability.
