  • Void Car Insurance

My son had a car insurance policy void in August 2015. His policy had him as retired even though he was only 25. It should have said unemployed. Someone ran into the back of him and he rang his insurance company just to make them aware, as he wasnt sure if he needed to or not. He didnt want to claim as the other driver had given all his details and had stated it was his fault as he had turned round to speak to his son in the back.
My son suffers quite badly with anxiety and depression and his insurance is coming up for renewal again. He has just had a quote of £3300 or £400 a month which he just cant afford. He needs his car so he can have his children. Is there anyway that he can get this void removed from his policy and not have to wait the 5 years. It really not fair when he has done nothing wrong.
    Any advice would be appreciated.

    Re: Void Car Insurance

    Hi and welcome

Unfortunately your son is very unlikely to have that record of a policy being voided removed.
It is the insured's responsibility to check that the details on the schedule are correct.
If they showed him as "retired" when he had completed the proposal correctly as "unemployed" he needed to inform the company immediately.

However whilst "unemployed" status affects some insurers' rates, it may be worth shopping around for alternative quotes.
This includes popping into your local insurance broker (not just online) as they sometimes have deals which are not available elsewhere.
In a face to face discussion with the broker your son can explain the reason for the voiding, the ridiculousness of a 23 year old being classed as retired when he had stated he was unemployed.
The broker may then (if he is any good and has contacts with the insurer's underwriters) contact the underwriters directly by phone, and "broke" the risk properly.
That's how we used to do it anyway!

Next year, when your son passes the magical 26th birthday, his premiums should drop sharply

His current premiums may be affected by his accident (even tho' non fault and no claim) his age, his illness, where he lives and the car he drives.

Also be aware that if his anxiety and depression is severe he may be required to notify the DVLA
