  • Money deposited in to the wrong account in July 2015

    Hi
Im new on here and have a banking issue. On a certain day in July 2015 i deposited £1000 into Natwest bank. I had no savings or direct debit card so used my drivers licence. (They had destroyed my debit card as i had closed my current account but not issued me a savings card) i have previously deposited and withdrawn money using ID.
Anyway i never checked my statement. There are no transactions taking place in that account ie direct debit/payments/wage etc. Its just savings so l took the receipt and left with peace of mindthat the money is safely deposited in my account.
In June this year i checked to see that on that day no money had been deposited. I went in branch to query this and i thought it would be a straightforward empathic response from the bank. Eg please take a seat... let's take some details etc. But honestly i was made to feel very uncomfortable. Had to deal with staff at service desk rather than being taken into a private a room etc. Lots of other stuff happened ie not being helpful etc. Stating they had no records for that far back but then tripped up by saying that older records were kept in another location (!) Long story short the manager finally said in a phone call (as i didn't get to see her) she would look into it but couldnt promise anything. I had some real specific details eg the date. The branch. Amount deposited. ID deposit as opppsed to card deposit. I asked them to look at the day in question. I mean how many £1000 deposits were taken on an ID basis that day? I further added that the likelihood is that the account that its gone into could be the same name as me or same initial and surname. Or they coukd have similar postcode or a variation/ similiar acc no to mine.
Anyway the bank rang back and left a voicemail saying they couldnt find anything out.
So its a £1000 ID deposit in that branch. My name etc.
But they said they couldnt find it.
I was very dissapointed and know had that been the banks money they would've been very thorough.
Is there anything else i can do? Ive even asked them to check cctv for that day and see what counter i went to and then check what transaction took place at that counter. But all i got was a voicemail saying they had nothing.
Please is there someone on here who knows of any way to get my money back.
    Thanks

I thought you had gone through the bank's complaint procedures.
Certainly try them first, but don't expect much!

I tried speaking with the manager. But really didn't get to see her. She co tacted me on the phone.
I will do both simultaneously ie complain to the bank and also go through the ombudsman. Thanks for the advice.

I think you have to go through their procedures. Before you go to the ombudsman.
Do you have the receipt for the transaction by any chance?
I would start by issuing a subject access data request for the cc TV footage on the bench in question on the day in question. Also ask for all other records they may hold on you. Cost is £10
Start a formal complaint in writing and work through the system. If necessary take the letter into the branch. You never know what shaking the tree might produce.

They are ambigouos in providing info and like i said they haven't been clear or told me what they have actually done. One of the advisors told me that its probable that they wouldnt have cctv footage as its been 2 years. But then contradicted herself by saying that information was held but offsite in another location. (Again unclear about what information she meant) i had the receipt up until a few months ago but had a mini clear out few months ago. The manager finally said in her voicemail message that they couldn't find anything and needed the receipt.
So i think i will go into branch and ask about their complaints procedure. And then write out a strongly worded complaints letter asking for cctv footage and a breakdown of what they have actually done to try and retrieve my money. If i dont get anywhere then Will go through the ombudsman.
