Hi LegalBeagles,
This is a hard one for me as I have two bosses and only one of them has done something wrong. I recently found out from a new client that one of my bosses disclosed information about my medical history to her in order to win her business. She runs a company that looks to help people with my condition.
The boss in question told me that I had a new account to manage and that it would be 'right up my street' as it was to do with my health issue. This comment was made in the office in front of other team members. Later, I received emails from the new client regarding what steps we would take next for her account and she started to offer me free consultation appointments. I thought this was odd but I accepted as I thought it must be to show me what it was she did so that I had a better understanding of how to promote her, plus my boss had already booked me in without asking me.
I went to the meeting and she mentioned that she knew about my issues and was hoping that she would be able to help me so I asked her outright how she knew and she told me that my boss had told her about it and had said that it put me in a great position to promote her business. I told her that I was unhappy about that and she looked sheepish and apologised and said it wasn't meant in malice and started to backtrack.
This comes after the previous year, where I was subjected to sexist questions by a visitor to the office in front of the same boss. In that instance I raised a formal complaint against the visitor and I was told that it had gone to formal and official disciplinary. I did not take it further with my boss at the time however we did have a conversation where I said that he needed to read employment law and make sure that he didn't do anything like this again or I would not be so lenient. He apologised and I let it go, but this was only because the business was in financial trouble at the time and I didn't want the other boss and my colleagues to suffer.
This is now the second time that this boss has put me in a situation like this though and I feel like I cannot let it slide a second time.
Please could I have some advice as we do not officially have a HR department and I'm not 100% sure that I trust telling the lady that used to do our HR as she is also friendly with them outside of work.
