  • Compensation by storage company for water damaged goods

    Hi,

I have just retrieved some of my late father's effects which were in storage for a year. The goods were not of great material value, however, they were precious to me. I insured them for £2500, and have made an insurance claim for £1100, which I felt was a reasonable sum to claim, given that not everything was damaged.

The insurance company have agreed to pay this figure, less a small excess, however, I have also attempted to claim reimbursement of the £1500 storage fees that I incurred during this period. The insurers have not responded to this claim, and the storage company have offered me just one month's rent, which I feel is unacceptable.

I have scary photos of many items covered in mould and with large water stains, and the storage company tell me their building had a new roof last year.

    Advice please!

Could you either post up a copy of the Terms and Conditions of your contrat with the storage company, or gve a link to them if they are on line.

In the meantime you could write back to the co, telling them it ain't sufficient, and you are contemplating initiating action via the county court if they do not offer a more realistic figure.

Thanks very much for responding so quickly. I have already emailed the company asking them
to review their offer within 7 days, and advising them that I am considering taking them to the
      County Court.

This is a quote from their website -

At xxxx, we aim to provide you the cleanest storage space with the friendliest
service. If we fail to live up to your expectations, your next month of storage
      is 100% free.

There are no strings or fine print – we want you to be completely satisfied with
your storage experience. We’ll work to make it right and give you a month
      of storage for free.

We know there are a lot of places you could store. Our goal is to be the

what your storage need or moving circumstance – we back that up 100%.
      "

Unfortunately, I am overseas at the moment, and don't have the documentation with me, nor can
I find a copy of the company's Ts & Cs online, but when I read them, it was evident that,
contrary to the above, there is an enormous amount of fine print, and they suggest that I don't
have a leg to stand on! Methinks they were drawn up by a very clever lawyer, and they are
      totally unreasonable!

looks like it may be storage mart (from a google search of the quote from the OP ) ... no sign of T&Cs on the site

I originally took out my contract with Big Box Storage in Ridgewood, near Uckfield, Sussex, but they have been taken over by Storage Mart, an American company, and when I moved from a larger unit to a smaller unit part way through the year, I signed a new contract with SM - unfortunately, I didn't read their Ts and Cs, which was remiss of me, but I thought that they would at least be responsible for keeping my good clean and dry, given the promises on their website!

                  .........

That's right. If they were on the website, nobody would use them, as basically they say they take no responsibility for anything and all customers must ensure their goods are adequately insured!

Thanks for your help, and If I don't get an improved offer I'll try and dig out the contract when I get back and see if that helps!
