• Council Tax - who's responsibility is it to make contact?

    Hi,

I bought a house 6 months ago and have yet to be contacted about paying council tax. Do I need to contact the council or shall I just wait until they contact me. Who's responsibility is it? Can I be charged for council tax avoidance even though they have made no contact with me about any kind of payment?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Crazy council might know for sure, but (personally) I'd be contacting the council and telling them I've recently moved and want to set up a CT account

To pay Council Tax, contact your local authority. Your local authority will register you and will send you a Council Tax bill. They will also tell you how and when to pay.
If you move to a new property or to a new area, tell your local authority or tell the local authority for the new area you have moved to.

Yes, as the occupier or owner, its your responcability to inform them of any changes in residentual status ( occupartion ). .

Its very likely some department in the council has you registered there. Its always best to let them know, becuase if you need time to catch up payments, you have more chance if you have notifed them.

There's nothing specific in legislation to force you to contact a local authority to advise you bought the property (why not ? - I've always wondered on that one) however the longer it's left the larger the backdated demand notice that you will get.
