I've just had my 88 year old mother on the phone worried about a letter she's received from this company on behalf of an alleged debt with British Gas.
She is currently in rented accommodation, and when she moved in, took her existing suppliers with her - therefore has no debt with British Gas in my view.
I've told her not to give anything away and if anyone come to the door tell them there is no contract, and therefore no debt.
What else can I do? it's going to worry the old dear sick.

It's not as simple as taking your existing supplier with you you when you move sadly. When she moved in she should have been told who the supplier was in the property and given and checked the meter readings on the day she moved in. She would have been deemed responsible for the usage from the day she moved in. She could then arrange to switch to her old supplier and this takes about 21 days (maybe a little more sometimes). So as long as the readings are correct when she moved in to the day of the switch she will owe a small amount to the previous supplier.
You need to check the dates of the bill to make sure you are not paying for a previous tenants account, sometimes this happens too.
