Voluntary Termination - they haven't collected money

Hi

I took out vehicle credit 3 years ago and used the voluntary termination about 10 months ago. They collected the car and said I had to pay the excess money. But They never contacted me again.
Bu today they wrote to me asking for the £1,300. I was in a position to pay when I took VTC but am not now. Can they do this?
