My daughter has been asked to sign up to an internal company training course, delivered by an existing employee, that will take a year. The contract she has been asked to sign requires her to pay back the full £2,500 'cost of the course' (more than 10% of her current yearly salary) if she leaves before she has finished, or at any time within 18 months of the course ending. This is only an internal course and is not nationally recognised.
The company has about 30 employees and everyone is being asked to sign up, so that represents a total cost of £75,000 which is more than three times the salary of the employee supplying the training.
Can her employer insist on this?
Thanks
Charles
