Am gonna ask openlaw as he is a recent graduate of law and I'm sure would have his finger on the pulse over student finance

I would also add that your university should have an advice office based at your student union who should be able to refer you to legal advice.

To clarify this, I am assuming you mean student loan because I think maintenance grants have long gone(I was one of the last lot of people who received them back in the late 1990's)

A student loan is different from grants, by grants it means you don't have to pay them back at all. Example, let's assume the student loans are £9,000 and the maintenance grant is £9,000, it means you'll have to pay back the £9k student loan but not the maintenance grant.

Student loans (old style) taken out before Sept 1998 could be statutory barred after 6 years as they're based on 'simple contract.' Student loans taken out on the newer rules (after Sept 1998) will be claimed through wages or other means without the student loans company having to go to court.
