  • Stanford and green bailiff applied excessive charges for council tax debt

    Hi,
I would really appreciate some advice. I incurred council tax arrears and a liability order that was sent to Stanford and green bailiffs for collection. I agreed a repayment plan of £160.00 a ,onto that I started repaying in Sept 2015 and paid monthly. In November 2015 my NHS contract was cut by 50 % as was my income. I still maintained my payments but contacted Step Change debt charity, they suggested I contacted by letter my council to request a single person discount to my original council tax bill and was awaiting an amended bill. I contacted Stanford Green and informed them by telephone I was awaiting an amended bill from council . The amended bill arrived on 17/3/16 . However on 3/3/16 my partner was admitted to hospital direct from out patients appointment in London and operated on the next day unexpectedly for cancer of lung. As it was unplanned I had additional costs for rail/ underground fares etc and taking him backwards and forwards. He has required further visits and a small surgery to fir a port for 6 months of chemotherapy that is also in London every week.
i have had another visit from the bailiff and he has added £235.00 to my council tax bill. . . . . The discount applied by the council for single person was £253.00 leaving me a balance owed to bailiff of £69.95 but now he's added £235.00 in charges which is excessive to me. I have explained the difficulties to council and to bailiff but the charges still stand.
How can I get the council to address their enforcement bailiff to waive the charges as I only actually owed £69.95 to stand ford and green once the council applied the discount on an amended bill dated 17/3/16.
My partner has now needed to move in with me due to his health and doing chemo for next 6 months so have had extra costs to move him from his flat. What responsibility does the council have to help/ assist in these circumstances of health and financial difficulty? I've soldiered on when things have been difficult just to be hit with excessive charges.
I would be grateful for advice in how to get the charges waived please, things are difficult enough.
    Nicola .
