  • PIP medical assessment

    Hi Everyone
I just wondered if anybody could tell me how I can get a home medical assessment. I live in Basingstoke in a wheelchair cannot walk at all . I have received an apt to go to southhampton but when I phoned to ask about a home visit they said they didn't do them. Also seeing that I am in a wheelchair they have changed the venue because they said Southampton had steps, wait for it they are sending me to Vauxhall in London which is 1hour 58 mins away from me. I have no friends or family and they said I will have to pay for a carer to go with me. They said if I was housebound that would be the only way they would come out. Could someone explain to me what housebound means. I have a mobility scooter and I can transfer to that with a struggle but once on it I cant get off it so the only place I go is the supermarket and then a personnel shopper goes round with me and does my shopping I can't even reach the shelves. I really have no idea what I am going to do the apt is 1st feb. I cant even wheel myself very far in my chair. Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you

    Re: PIP medical assessment

    Hi and welcome,
This from ATOS site, I think you need a letter from your GP or specialist to confirm your lack of mobility and the difficulties you would have trying to get to any of
    the centres they have suggested.

Can I be seen by a Health Professional in my home?
All of our consultation centres are based in local communities and accessible using public transport, so it is as easy as possible for people to attend.
We recognise that there will be some circumstances when home consultations are more appropriate than attending a consultation centre. Using DWP guidance we review every claimant’s circumstances on an individual basis to decide whether their face to face consultation will be in one of our consultation centres or in the home. Situations where a claimant may need a home consultation can include where a person’s diagnosis suggests a significant disability that may make travel extremely difficult or the claimant provides evidence from a health care professional that they are unable to travel due to their health condition or impairment.

An organisation who assess (un)fitness for work but has steps which make access difficult/impossible for wheelchair users to achieve?
You couldn't make it up, could you!
This should come under disability discrimination (Equality Act 2010) - reasonable adjustments.
IMHO asking you to travel miles away on public transport & pay for your own carer is not reasonable.

There does seem to be two 'assessment' centres in Southampton, and both don't look particularly inaccessible for wheelchairs. Certainly no steps on the outside. Benefits & Works are asking people to feedback on wheelchair access and facilities but don't seem to have had much input. Maybe needs someone independent to give the Southampton centre a call and ask about wheelchair access?

I cannot work I just about weight bear to transfer to armchair. I have no use of my right leg at all and little use on the rest of my right side. They said they would provide a taxi and from my address to Vauxhall takes 1 hr 58 mins according to google. Also the care agency have refused to send anyone with me. I really cant understand the whole reasoning behind me not being housebound when I am unable t. go out. The southhampton one is called Physioworld in hedge end . I will have to get someone to phone again tomorrow and try and see why I am being sent so far away .
