Before Christmas I received an outstanding council tax letter from swift whereby I contacted them to offer payment in two installments over the next two months. They refused to discuss the case with me as I wasn't named on the notice. After checking I see that to previous tenants plus my housemate is mentioned. As I wrote to the council a few months ago to inform them of the tenants leaving and myself and my housemate to be the new tenants I found it odd that these names hadn't been changed. I also asked for a bill so I could sort out any outstanding debt and arrange payment for future months.
Unfortunately yesterday we had a visit from an enforcement agent posting a letter and adding on a few hundred pounds.
Regardless of this as soon as I was back in the country, I managed to talk to Swift today who told me that I needed written authorization from my current housemate so that I could discuss this with them and offer payment. Got this done today, and re-iterated to them that they should deal with me and also informed the council again of the current tenants.
Swift agent called and refuse my offer of payment and demanded the full amount immediately and that further charges would be applied (along with goods being seized according to the letter). He hung up when I started explaining the situation. I immediately emailed swift and informed them of the whole situation and that I am not refusing to pay but require a breakdown of all fees and charges in MY name, not former tenants. They informed me I can only deal with my helpful agent 'Clive'. Clive has spent the day calling both myself and my housemate and demanding full payment. I was going to visit CAB in the morning to try and get this dealt with or at least get swift to accept a reasonable payment plan (which I am willing to pay in large installments to make it brief) and to stop any further charges being added just, I assume to make a little profit for Swift.
I am offering to pay but just can't pay today and want my name on any written correspondence. My housemate is panicking currently.
