  • Charging Order by Northumbrian Water

Hi, I wonder if someone can give me some advice please? I have had a CCJ with Northumbrian Water since 2011, and I have done my best to pay. We have always wanted to pay the CCJ and pay the yearly bills by instalments and have asked them if we could do this numerous times but they take no notice of us so we end up with multiple ccjs as they send us no payment cards to do so. Anyway I digress, we owe them 1200 pounds and have had to report them twice to the ombudsman for failing to send out payment cards to enable us to pay the ccj's as what was happening was as we would clear one ccj they did not let us know and we would then start paying another one not realising we needed a new payment card, so our payments would be allocated to a different account and they would send us threatening letters.
We finally received a payment card for the above ccj 2 months ago after months of calling and letter writing which surprise surprise they don't have any record of as usual, and I admit that due to illness on my part (which I know is no defence) my mind was on other things and I left the card in the envelope in a cupboard, after it had finally arrived. Anyway, I received a letter from them this morning saying they are going to place a Charging Order on my property for 1200 pounds at Kings Lynn Court, I live in the North East so there is no chance of me going there, and I have to ring by the 20th of August and pay the full amount. I do not really understand what a charging order is, I do not even know who signed the letter as the signature is illegible, and now I am worried sick and my blood pressure is through the roof. I admit I made a genuine mistake and now I don't know what to do....help.

Ask to have the hearing transferred to your local court. It sounds like Northumbrian Water are behaving in a very underhand manner. Does the court know about their tactics? I wouldn't have thought a court would be too impressed with them.
