Please can someone help me!!
I took out an insurance policy as a provisional driver with Debenhams, underwritten by southern rock. The policy started on 8th Dec 12 after i'd paid the £100 deposit and the first monthly installment of £29. On the 15th of Dec I was stopped by the police on a shopping trip away from home with my 34week pregnant girlfriend and her mums partner acting as my qualified driver. When the police checked with DVLA it came back that Roberts (qualified driver) license had been revoked, which he was unaware of and as a result of this I wasn't covered. Instead of usual procedure for no insurance the police didn't impound my car but allowed me to drive 3miles with them following to park it up until I arranged for someone else to travel 40miles to act as a qualified driver so we could get home. At the side of the road the police officer had told me he would have to write to my insurance company to explain what had happened but assured me that nothing usually happens and the insurance companys 9times out of 10 don't bother acting, which i found odd.
Robert is a NHS nurse of 15 years and had numerous cars and hire cars. I'd seen his license and had no reason to question the validity of it. Am I to blame for this error and do I deserve to have my policy cancelled. This has all just came to light last week when I received a letter
from the insurer informing me they I no longer have their cover and from the 15th my policy has been cancelled. Obviously unaware of this until last week i've been driving without insurance. This is a big mess for me. The reason i insured myself as provisional driver was to have things sorted for when my baby was due and because it was more cost effective than a full license. My girlfriend was due yesterday and still no sign of baby. I was hoping to have this sorted by now. What can I do about this if anything? am I at fault? And what can i do to sort this?
Thanks, any help or assistance would be much appreciated...
