Re: Tax Credit Help
Hi. Don't panic. This happened to me. Not a small sum either, about £7,000.
In my case they have agreed to suspend tax credits until the amount is eventually repaid. They have not asked for it all back in one sum. So relax.
What you must do is take the initiative and write to them and explain what your circumstances are ie what your income is and that you don't have the capital to repay them. I enclosed an income and expenditure sheet demonstrating my circumstances and explained that I couldn't afford to repay that sort of money. I did however make an offer of repayment which was very low based on my i/e sheet. I offered to back it up with proof but they never asked for that.
A very nice lady called me back and explained that they would suspend the tax credit until it eventually gets repaid. In short, I'll probably never get any tax credit ever again but its better than being made bankrupt! But they are not monsters and while their letters are frightening you need to put your case to them and they will listen to you.
Maybe they don't always suspend tax cred, perhaps it only happens where a family can't afford to repay them out of income or capital.
But take the above action and see what happens. Report back here as it will help others in the same situation as you.Last edited by The Debt Star; 14th September 2011, 21:48:PM.

Re: Tax Credit Help
I preferred to write to them first, with the i/e sheet. The 'phone conversation came afterwards and was at their prompting. The lady from tax creds really was understanding and although she wasn't able to make a decision herself, the letter from them that came afterwards contained the offer to suspend future tax creds.
I'm not saying that will happen here, since I guess each case is decided on its own merits and the amounts involved, but it shows that the urban myths about the evil taxman are often unfounded. At least that was my experience.
I hope sfarrell38 keeps us updated as it will help others to see what steps are taken by him/her and what the tax creds people do in response.

In my case, though, the overpayments were correct and arose due to my failure (inadvertant I might add) to notify them of an increase in salary. So it all probability the OP's massive overpayment has arisen in similar circumstances, but who knows.
Winner's contact post is useful. I didn't fill their form in though, just made my appeal in writing.

Re: Tax Credit Help
Hi
The Tax office unlike banks and credit card companies are more helpful
The letter they send about paying back your overpayment is a opener where they expect you to contact them you would not be expected to pay it all back at once and the online form is if you want to appeal about the amount they say you owe
It takes a while to get sorted and you can still appeal if the dicision does not go your way
Try to deal direct with address I have given or the if you want to Phone them there is a number that gets you through to the overpayment dept they will be more helpful its should be on your demand if you have one
