  • Hello and Help!

    Please can someone advise me what to do or point me in the right direction?!

    My mum is elderly and is in the early stages of alzheimers. My brother and I have Lasting Power of Attorney for both property and financial affairs as well as for health and welfare (jointly and severally).

    The problem is that my mum inherited a substantial amount of money from her husband who died recently he didn't leave a will and my brother who lives near my mum (I live hundreds of miles away) refuses to disclose this amount to me! My mum whose memory and confusion is getting worse by the day says she can't remember how much money she has got and to ask my brother!

    There has been a lot of ill will from my mum's ex-husbands children who despite being given their dad's old house think they should have more of the money. My brother is saying that he want's to ring fence some of the money for my Mothers care and her ex-husbands children should either now or later get the majority of the money.

    My problem is that as well as being very upset by his behaviour towards me is that I can't look into what future care I can plan for my mum in the way of care homes etc. if I have no knowledge of her finances.

    Do I have a right to know how much my mum has inherited and if so how can I find out? Also if my brother is doing something with my mum's money is he accountable in anyway?

    It seems a complete waste of time me having LPA if I don't know what's going on.

    Re: Hello and Help!

    I suggest that you contact a specialist solicitor, in order to gain the correct advice;
    Contentious Will matters are extremely complex.
