  • Hello everyone. Advice on getting my child benefit back from Hsbc would be great!!

Basically after months of poor service / unfair charges topping £200 on some months, I jumped ship from Hsbc to NatWest.

I informed all my direct debits of my new account EXCEPT child benefit, this meant that over 2 months of benefit was paid incorrectly to my old Hsbc account. They won't give it back as it's been swallowed up in charges.

I've asked for it back in the bank, I've written to them quoting the right of appropriation and they wrote back telling me to sod off.

Any suggestions? Could I contact the child benefit office and ask them to reclaim it from Hsbc?

    Thanks!!!

Welcome to Leagle Beagles. Sorry I don't know the answer to your question, but there's some people VERY knowledgeable about banks on here so I'm sure you'll get an answer. It's often very quiet over the weekend so don't think you've been ignored if you don't hear anything before Monday!

If you had informed Child Benefit of the change of account then they would be responsible, assuming it was the next payment, in sorting out things with the bank so you receive the money to the right place, if however, as it sounds, you forgot to inform CB of the change then unfortunately your fight is with the bank.

I'd be interested to see the letter regarding the right of appropriation you had back from them, it may help form a plan with what to go back to them with. Of course there is hardship and the lending code, but appropriation is entirely undervalued and under respected by the banks.

Did you list what the money was from and what it was required for in your request to them |?

              Hi Amethyst,
I didn't inform child benefit that we'd changed banks til it was too late unfortunately.
Thing is, I filled in the paperwork for NatWest to do the changeover for me, the paperwork was returned for some reason, I did return it all corrected but I guess by that time I'd done it all myself!!
I sent the letter of appropriation from this website.

Can you suggest what or how I could reply to Hsbc?
