  • Uni Accommodation Fee (during lockdown)

    Hi All,

Newbie here, my son has received a Claim from the Civil National Business Centre, stating that he owes accommodation costs for his 1st year at Uni during lockdown (2020/21) total amount of £5,032.45 of which £876.83 is interest. My points of question are:

1 - I have asked for more time but have not received any acknowledgement of this - I had to register this with www.moneyclaim.gov.uk - i can see that i have requested it but nothing back to say they agree with it - do i take it that its accepted?

2 - During that awful time - many students were locked into their accommodations, but i pulled my son out of there as soon as i could see a possible lockdown so he spent most of that year at home (taking online lessons that had no help at all but that's for another day). is there anyway i can counter claim this cost as he didnt use the services and when the contract was signed there was no sign of COVID and the lockdown - has anyone else had any experience or success in this area?

3 - we dont have the funds to pay for this and had no idea the cost had been escalating - we have moved house since 2022 (but had mail forwarding with the post office) and this claim came randomly out of the blue - are there ways to pay this off with a minimum amount per month and does this affect my sons credit rating?

    thank you for any responses

Having a claim issued against him won't in itself affect his credit rating but if the claim gets to court AND the judge rules that your son owes the money AND he doesn't pay it within 30 days then that will affect his credit rating. The CCJ (County Court Judgement) will then be on his credit record.
