  • Household Insurance

I've had house insurance with a company for three years. In the first year, it was set to automatically renew and was paid with my credit card. Last year, I renewed with the same company without any issues. This year, I didn't receive any renewal notices. The company claims they sent them to my email, but I've checked my laptop and phone and can't find them anywhere. Additionally, the automatic renewal wasn't in place because they said I canceled it last year. As a result, the policy expired on October 28th. Unfortunately, we were burgled on November 1st, and when I contacted the insurance company, I discovered we were not insured. I'm devastated, as I thought the insurance expired in November. Is this something I just have to accept, or is there anything I can do? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you,
    Robert

You should make a complaint to the insurance company. At the end of the first year the insurance automatically renewed. This is usually standard practice with insurance companies. The insurance should have renewed automatically again at the end of the second year. You had no reason to believe your possessions were not insured by the company
If you do not receive a satisfactory reply you should refer your complaint to the FOS

Ask them for details of the cancellation of the automatic renewal which they allege you did. Copy of email or phone conversation.

Have you made a Subject Access Request?

The key to this is getting them to prove they had an instruction from you to cancel the automatic renewal. If they can't then they acted improperly by not renewing it.

Contact your email platform provider, ask them to provide details for all incoming / outgoing emails from XXXXXXX Insurance company. Important evidence from a 'third party'.
