  • Two URN numbers issued by Crown Court for same offence

My son was charged and went to court, which was then thrown out by judge after he spent three months on remand.
Three months on, he was up again in court for the same charge, no new evidence, in front of a new judge who says “there is a case to answer for”.
This was a year ago. His case is listed for this month, and he has had no contact from the solicitors.
So I contact the court last week, and discovered that the same case has been assigned a different URN number.
I have emailed the court following on from the call, explaining that two URN numbers have been assigned for one charge. According to the woman I spoke to at the court, she will pass on the email to the original judge.
I am of the belief that two URN numbers should never have been issued, and that the first judge’s ruling stands whereby it was thrown out? Am I correct? We have contacted the original solicitors and wondered why they did not pick up on the fact that 1 year ago, a different URN number was issued. We are waiting for the assigned solicitor to get back to us.
The case starts on the 24.06.2024. I am at my wits end.

    Hi CRISY

    Welcome to LB

From what I gather, there should only be one URN for an offence, reason being, i.e. you could potential lose document / evidence as it would be under 2 URN's. Defeats the whole point of URN's.

I believe the following is still current, check section 1.3:

Why was this issue not raised with the "new judge" who said there was a case to answer? If it has been thrown out it has been thrown out, presumably for good reason, and should not be resurrected. You need to get onto the solicitor and not give up until you get an answer. Is this legal aid - not that it should make a difference? Arrange a meeting with the solicitor yesterday....
