  • Disclosing past information from a job

I was recently suspended for a long period of time from a care job. I was hardly contacted, so I left, as the situation I was suspended from was actually nothing to do with me. When I applied for another job in more clinical care, I didn't disclose it as I was unaware I was under investigation , when my former employer gave a reference, they had told them that i was under investigation. My new job dismissed me, for not disclosing it. I am appealing it, because how was I meant to disclose something that I didn't even know myself. I am not put out of a job and struggling to make ends meet. i have a job interview tomorrow for hospitality, and I am unsure whether I have to disclose any of this, and what I should be disclosing exactly. I have applied for JSA and UC, however you can have to wait for 13 weeks if the last job you have been dismissed from. I really don't know what to do here. my first employer completely left me in the dark, and are now preventing me from moving forward in my life. they are also refusing to give me an update about the 'investigation', so I just have to keep disclosing it until one day it doesn't show up on a reference, that's if i don't get turned away first (which i will)

I am not sure how you could have been unaware that your were under investigation as you had been suspended. Suspending an employee happens whilst an investigation is undertaken into allegations of serious misconduct. In terms of a reference in clinical care, given you were suspended from a care job, depending on the allegations, it may be that this information would have been required to be disclosed in a reference.

    When did the suspension happen?
When you asked then for an update on the investigation did you do this in writing and did they give an timescale as to when it would be completed?
I am wondering whether in fact they have continued with the investigation given that you resigned.

How can you possibly think that you were not under some kind of suspicion when you were suspended?

It’s never happened to me before - they gave me hardly any information at all, not even as to why I was suspended at first. They hadn’t told me anything at all about the process. I don’t know how I’m supposed to know something when my company don’t tell me, therefore I cannot tell future employers. There were also other people that were questioned but were still allowed to work, the whole situation didn’t even involve me, I wasn’t there. The suspension happened November last year and I left in end of March. I have them refusing to tell me in written writing, and the fact he told me he would never be able to provide me an update or timescale. I am in contact with local authorities to see if they can give me an update but no response yet. I think they are continuing the investigation without me. I wrote to the owners and explained that had I been aware of the extent and the exact process then I wouldn’t of left, I left because my mental health had become extremely low because I hadn’t been told anything.

I always say that honesty is the best policy and if you are asked in a job interview why you left it is because you resigned after 5 months with no outcome to an investigation for which you have been given no update on or timescale as to when it would be completed.
