  • House, shared ownership

    Hi,
over a decade ago, my parents and I bought a house together, with myself on the deeds, and them as "ghost" (sorry I don't know the correct term) owners, I only had £50k to put in to the cost, £250k of the house, so they really helped me and my daughter considerably.I have lived with my daughter in this house, while my parents lived elsewhere, the plan being for them to move in with me when they both retire.
My mother is now saying she is going to sell the house, give me my £50k (house is currently valued at £350-400k) back, I'm in a panic, I have no idea how I can house my daughter and myself in this situation. A friend has said maybe legally I would be entitled to more that just my initial £50k, but I have no idea, is this likely?

    Thanks, Amber.

Start by obtaining Land Registry entries so you can see exactly who the registered proprietors are. If they include yourself, you may well be in a position to block a sale until you receive a fair share of the proceeds - probably the same percentage as your contribution to the original purchase price.

If your parents are not shown on the Land Registry title, then they are going to find it very hard (to put it mildly) to force a sale.

Do come back when you have further information.
