I am very ashamed to say that in a moment of madness, I walked out of The Range with under £5 of goods I hadn't paid for. A store detective approaced me and I offered to pay for the goods ( he wouldn't let me )and handed them back. He took my ID and took a photo and said I'd get a banning notice and have to pay costs. The police were not called and he didn't mention reporting it to them. I have foolishly paid the costs to RPL . What is bothering me is that the store banning notice says that a copy of the banning notice will be formally served to the local police authority for their retention. Does this mean I will have a police record that will show up on DBS standard and advanced checks?

The problem with trying to answer your question is that there is no simple answer.
Firstly the Range might not actually inform the police.
If the police do have an allegation of theft, they may or may not include details on an advanced DBS check.
The decision is made by the chief Police Officer in the relevant area.
However if they intend to include details of allegations I understand that the subject is advised in advance so they can make representations.
Sorry I can't give you more positive information

To answer my own question, here's an excerpt from Hansard 2011 where Simon Hughes MP explains to the House of Commons the relationship (or rather lack of one) RLP claims it has with the police.
Civil Recovery (England and Wales) - Hansard - UK Parliament
The company has also clearly misrepresented the position. Until last November, RLP's website stated that
''we have established operating procedures for Civil Recovery and agreed guidelines with the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) and Association of Chief Police Officers Scotland (ACPOS)''.
However, in October last year, the assistant chief constable who leads on retail crime for ACPO wrote to Jackie Lambert at RLP stating:
''Whilst there may have been agreements in the past about exchanging data and operating civil recovery with ACPO, there are no such agreements in place now and indeed on several occasions over the last few years I and my colleagues have asked that such references be deleted. Please remove from your website any and all references which state or imply that RLP operates its civil recovery in agreement or cooperation with the Police Service. Clearly if you have an agreement with an individual force you could make reference to that, but I know of none.''
In November last year, ACPOS said:
''At no time have ACPOS entered into any formal agreement with RLP or assisted them in any civil recovery''.
