This is regarding a final settlement offer letter for an old Tesco credit card debt. I get this same letter every three months (quarterly) from Mortimer Clarke with the usual two week time limit!
I read on here somewhere that someone who had a similar offer said that they paid the amount but then Mortimer Clarke said it was a mistake and that they still owed the full amount and another thread said to seek advice before dealing with Mortimer Clarke.
This is from quite a few years ago and I think Cabot got it from Tesco at first before Mortimer Clarke and there was a CCJ so I had to offer something.
I've been paying a token amount of £1 a month as I've been on benefits since then. There's no interest and the balance decreases each time I pay £1.
I am now registered disabled as I since developed some long term health conditions and am on sickness benefits.
I think Mortimer Clarke got this debt from Cabot and have been sending me these final offer letters shortly afterwards for the last few years.
The letter says "Once you have paid the amount we will send you a letter to let you know the account is closed"
It looks like I could make the payment by several methods without even having to speak to them but obviously I would want to make certain that I do indeed get confirmation of the account being closed from Mortimer Clarke.
My question is do you think this offer is genuine or a lure of some kind? and should I make the payment or just continue with the £1 per month?
The account currently stands at approx. £1930 and their settlement offer is for me to pay approx. £580. saving approx. £1350.
I can make the payment at the moment and although it's still quite a chunk for me I would like to see the back of any personal debt.
The current time limit on this particular letter (and these letters often seem to arrive nearly a week after the date on the letter) is next Tuesday the 20th September 2022.
I imagine if I don't make the payment I'll get the next "time limited offer" letter three months from now in December, though it may be more difficult to pay it then.
I would like to see the back of this but Interested to know what people think or suggest.
I can upload attachments of images of the letter but apparantly don't have authorization to create/post them.
Thanks!
