  • Shares, no will

    * sorry I meant to post this in the wills section but cant see how i can delete it and re post .

Hello wondering if anyone can advise. Sadly my dad passed away last year. He didnt have a will. I've only just recently discovered paperwork that states he had shares. I think it'll all active still. I'm not sure what I should do. When he passed away he didnt have a property, processions of value etc just what was in his bank.
There wasn't much in the bank and I was able to close his bank account by following the banks requests of proof that I was his next of kin. I paid off his debts.
So there was no need for probate or letters of administration, just proof I was next of kin. Would trying to close the shares have similar process? Or do I just ask the name to be changed on the account ? Thanks

You will need a grant of letters of administration to change ownership of shares.

Many estates you can get away without probate. Some you can't. If you want the shares, ask, but I expect you will need a probate.
