    Hi,

    I hired a van for two days.
    When I returned it the rental worker checked the vehicle and told me that he was happy with the vehicle and that the £200 held on my card would be refunded back to me.
    However the next day (today), they sent me an invoice for the rental with an added refuelling charge of just over £132.
    If that was not bad enough, the van wasn't even full to the top when I collected it. I was a bit unsure as I know some vehicles fuel needles don't go all the way up. So I took a photo of it when I collected it with the mileage showing next to it.
    When I returned it I did the same - took a photo of the fuel gauge and the mileage. I didn't mention this to the rental clerk but like I say, he told me he was happy with the vehicle.
    I also have the receipt for the refuelling which was done a few miles away about 1 hour prior to dropping the van off.

    I have tried calling the rental company multiple times but they are not answering the phone a the branch or in their main office.

    Would this be something I can do a chargeback on? I paid using AMEX. I'm very disappointed in this company as it's one of the larger better-known ones and I purposely avoided another two companies which I know have a terrible reputation.

    Apart from the financial loss, the attempt to deceive you is disgusting.
    I suggest a letter sent by recorded delivery setting out your complaint could be helpful. I suggest saying unless they contact you within 7 days you will take the matter further.

        Thanks. Yes I'm very annoyed about it. The ironic thing is I was using the hire van to get me around after being ripped off by a car dealer who I only recently brought to book thanks to this forum.

          Thanks. I will give that a shot. I've done a chargeback before with AMEX for physical goods not received. A smaller amount but they found in my favour.

              What did the contract say about refuelling
              It said they charge you £2 odd plus vat a litre but even if it did, the tank was full so what tiny amount of fuel I used between the petrol station and the hire place would not come to such a relatively astronomical sum.

                  It was Avis Budget. It's a shame because they were good the first time I used them but as I said to them, I won't ever use them again now. Got my money back off them the other day.
