  • Career advice - career change into law

I hope this isn't in the wrong section...or forum/website in general...sorry if it is.

I'm just looking for some career advice really. I currently work in health & safety and have always been fascinated by the legal side of the profession.

I've been thinking for some time whether it's worth embarking on a law degree (specifically a LLB degree), which would take me 6 years to do part time, and wouldn't be complete until I'm approximately 40/41........now with that revelation in mind - am I just a wally with a pipedream, or has anybody out there made a similar move at a late age? If I was to complete it, I imagine there wouldn't be many takers for a 40 year old with no experience, but I also think it would compliment my current qualifications in my current career.

It would be a no brainer if I was younger, and annoyingly I was considering it my school days.

...shall I just park it and get on with my life?

Go for it and see how you find it. Most regrets are about what people haven't done not what they did.
In his 30s with 2 children my brother quit a job he had endured since leaving school to take a full-time degree. Never once regretted the move.
An employer could be impressed by someone with a good work record showing courage and commitment to a new career. You would not be old ask Mr.Attenborough.
It's easy to give advice, harder to make a decision. Whatever you choose may the future bring all you wish yourself.

Well, people are living longer (improvements in medicine etc), the Government will keep pushing the retirement age back, so at some stage that will be 100, so plenty of time for your law degree to bear fruit.

Go for it! The older you are the more you are taken seriously in the law anyway.

I'm halfway through an OU criminology course at 52 but I have no plans to work in that area, just something that interested me.
