  • Bullied/intimidated by a member of staff at asda store

I wondered if anyone could help me ,i went into my local asda supermarket on 1st September this year (2021) and this is the email that i sent to the head office. any input would be appreciated.
as you can imagine i feel pretty aggrieved by it all.

At 16.33 on the 1/09/21,i did my shopping with my 5 year old grandson, on getting to the till to get served, I started talking to the till assistant, which was going well, and then i was told the total, in which i had got my money out of my purse, I went to hand it to the assistant, and her reaction was totally over the top, she was screaming at me, humiliating me, intimidating me in such a loud voice, in which everyone at the tills just instantly stared right at me, i have never been so embarrassed in my whole life, when she said she couldn't accept my money because i had licked my finger to get my money out of my purse, I then said to her "so what shall i do with all my groceries! and her reply was " well, you will have to use this, and shoved the hand sanitizer in front of me, and said "you better use this, I do not use hand sanitizer as i am allergic to it, but as i needed the groceries, I said to her "i will use it, but only a bit" and her reply was "you wont use a bit" you will use a lot!, then as i was using the sanitizer, she continued to scream at me yet again, and said in a loud voice "you are disgusting and i am so angry and upset with you! when she gave me the change out of the till, i then said to her "you have just given me the change out the till, which that change has been given to you by other customers, she replied by saying, well should i say screaming at me that she uses hand sanitizer every time she hands out change, but yet the customers in front of me, she never used it! i also said to her "how come the shopping trolleys and baskets are not getting cleaned by the staff with any sprays like they use to, and her reply was "that has nothing to do with me" i then said to her (to try to calm her down, about my 5 year old grandson, getting chemical burns down his arms, after been forced to use it in schools, and her reply was, "this has nothing to do with him, this is about you, not him, by this point i could see my grandson getting quite upset because of the whole situation, I quickly packed my groceries away to get away from the situation, and on my way out of the store, I saw another assistant that was passing me, so i asked if i could have a word with her, about what just happened and she said "i will get the manager" and then the manager came to me, the poor manager didn't know what to say to me, he said he was going to go and have a word with her. but thanked me for reporting it. i do believe all the tills in the stores have cameras on them, I would like a copy of this instance, should i decide to take legal advice, and also on returning home, my arm became itchy, in which case i was scratching it for a couple of hours until it calmed down. I look forward to hearing from you

    Thankyou in advance,
    its much appreciated

I think I would write to head office about what happened with a copy to the store manager in order to avoid someone else having to go through this experience.

Hi islandgirl, that is the original copy that i sent to the head office, i will send you the reply that i received back from head office:

Thank you for your patience while I investigate your complaint and I hope this e-mail finds you well.

As promised, I've investigated this as thoroughly as possible and can confirm the feedback was passed to the store to be addressed as necessary. We take all customer complaints seriously and will always be sure to do this.

As my colleague advised, we never divulge the outcomes of any actions taken towards colleagues and this is due to confidentiality.

Regarding your Subject Access Request, it's unfortunate we were unable to honour this however the Data Protection Team have made every effort to accommodate it.

I'm sorry you still feel unhappy following this incident and we never want our customers to be left feeling as you were. Although my colleague has sent you a £5 e-gift card as a gesture of goodwill, I'm sending an additional £15 and I hope you'll consider this an acceptable resolution. Please note this amount is final and will not be increased.

From reviewing the previous information, I'm satisfied this has been handled in line with our procedure. While I understand nothing can undo what happened, I hope I've gone some way towards restoring your faith in us and you'll feel confident to shop with us again.

Finally, thank you for allowing me the opportunity to respond and we hope to welcome you in our stores again soon.

Thank you for the information. Can I ask what you actually want from this? What would you like Asda to do that they have not done? I am not saying they have handled it well but it would be good to know what you would like them to do.

                Hi islandgirl,
Thankyou for replying to me, it is much appreciated, i'm not quite sure what i am wanting to be honest, i've never been in this situation before, i just feel like the woman in question has got away with what she did to me and my grandson, and to be humiliated, intimidated, bullied and absolutely made out to look like it was all my fault, if you understand me x

Yes it was a terrible experience and I would be very angry if it happened to me. However they are not going to disclose what they did it seems. You have limited options in my view - either do not shop there again and remove your custom or go public on something such as the Asda account on Twitter and say what happened - that is the nuclear option of course! Twitter still allows "anonymous" profiles so you can keep your identity secret from the public domain I believe.

Good luck. I am not sure it was advice to do that but an option - I have no idea if it will help! I have heard that companies often respond better when an incident goes public though have not done it myself....see what happens if you decide to do this - you will have to cut your story down to not many characters though

Hm, I had the same experience quite a time ago, I made a comment, (Tesco) this lady started shouting at me, but that lady got my reply, I would hate to be your husband, I really pity him married to a person like you, she was still screaming as we walked away. Strangely she was not there on our next visit.
