  • Accidental shoplift

Hi, hoping someone can help me. A few days back I was shopping in Tesco. I set an item in my trolley which totalled £7.50 a gin set, I had other items in my trolley as well. I stupidly got my shopping bags, waved them about to open them preparing to pack my shopping into these bags and set the 2 or 3 bags stupidly on top of the said item £7.50 gin set. I was distracted as at the time of setting the bags in my trolley as I was messaging a relative about a family member in hospital so just wasn't thinking at all. I got to the checkout, put my other items through which totalled like £35. I paid for these using Tesco pay app. I remembered that a few days previous I bought £18 worth of goods and forgot my clubcard so went over to customer service before leaving and asked them to add points to my card which they did. So when casually walking out of the store and just outside the front door I was approached by a security they said can I have the gin set you never paid for, to my amazement and shock I thought I actually didn't pay for that. I said to the security guard I am very sorry, totally accidental and please let me go in and pay. He said no, I said it was genuinely an honest mistake and I'll pay and again he said no. So I apologised again and walked on as I was mortified. He never took my name, address or anything but I'm guessing I'll be able to be tracked via Tesco pay app.

I am asking will Tesco report this to local police? I am beyond anxious I am going to get a knock on my door from the police, I am not sleeping right over this and cannot stop thinking about it.

Any help or advice is appreciated.

    Hi AB

It was a genuine mistake. It is very unlikely that the store / police will want to take any action. If you want to, just email Tesco customer service, explain what happened as you have above. Also explain that you offered to pay, but the security guard wasn't interested. There is no point in worrying.

If anything else develops update the thread.

      Hi there Echat11
Many thanks for the reply. Do you think it's worthwhile actually emailing them or I was thinking of ringing the branch and asking for the manager and explaining? I am worried because it may look premeditated when I waved my bags and set them on top.

For me writing is better, if you phone, it's easy to get 'tongue tied'. In email you can say exactly what you mean, verbally it's easy to get your sentiments 'misconstrued', I would send it to Customer Services, they can pass it onto the manager. Don't worry about what it looked like, say you offered to pay 3 times, you were told 'No'.

Ok I will do that. Do you think I'm stressing over nothing and Tesco won't actually do anything about it for something of such little value? You have mentioned that I offered to pay sever times which I did, does this hold some weight that it was accidental? Just trying to gather all info to put together and email.

You'll be fine, it's easily done. If anything develops, update the thread. I'd be very, very surprised if anything developed.

Ok thank you kindly for replying. It's put my mind at ease. I am worried about actually sending an email incase it escalates and they want to contact me etc....and to be honest I'd rather forget about it and move on but like I said I am so worried I'm going to get a knock on the door from the police as I used my clubcard and they can get my name and address from that. The security guard never asked my name, address or asked me to come to a back room so I'm kinda guessing and hoping seeing they recovered their £7.50 worth off goods that's it over.

Give it a couple more days, go in and buy something, concentrate at the till. Then report back, see if they say anything.

I actually don't want to ever set foot back in that store again as I'd feel like I am being watched for something completely accidental. I am a worrier and get this out of my head.
